Czech Republic Will Sign Agreement About Controversial Radar Base With U.S. on May 5

advertisement

Prague - A written agreement between the governments of the Czech Republic and the United States concerning the placement of a controversial American radar base on Czech soil should be signed on May 5, 2008, during a conference in Prague about missile defense with participation by U.S Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary General of NATO Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. The text of the agreement is expected to be finalized next week at the NATO summit in Bucharest, Romania, according to Czech diplomatic spokesperson Zuzana Opletalova, who added that "now it is a question of organization rather than negotiation". Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I question whether this is a good historical moment for the Czechs to thumb their noses at Russia (or if indeed there will ever be a good time). This missile defense system is seen as a provocation, and the radar base may seem a precursor. Now that the Czechs are in the E.U., are they testing the waters of acceptance?

When Gov. Schwarzenegger addressed the Republican National Convention in 2005, he gave a wonderful, heartfelt speech about the difficulties of growing up in Austria in the years following WWII during the time of Soviet domination. Are the Central Europeans willing to risk a return to the gloom of those days?

Why not just say, "no thanks" to Secretary Rice and Mr. Bush? Just asking.
