Prague - A written agreement between the governments of the Czech Republic and the United States concerning the placement of a controversial American radar base on Czech soil should be signed on May 5, 2008, during a conference in Prague about missile defense with participation by U.S Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary General of NATO Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. The text of the agreement is expected to be finalized next week at the NATO summit in Bucharest, Romania, according to Czech diplomatic spokesperson Zuzana Opletalova, who added that "now it is a question of organization rather than negotiation". I question whether this is a good historical moment for the Czechs to thumb their noses at Russia (or if indeed there will ever be a good time). This missile defense system is seen as a provocation, and the radar base may seem a precursor. Now that the Czechs are in the E.U., are they testing the waters of acceptance?
When Gov. Schwarzenegger addressed the Republican National Convention in 2005, he gave a wonderful, heartfelt speech about the difficulties of growing up in Austria in the years following WWII during the time of Soviet domination. Are the Central Europeans willing to risk a return to the gloom of those days?
Why not just say, "no thanks" to Secretary Rice and Mr. Bush? Just asking.
